Buying an expensive item from eBay, but cash on collection only

Ive been looking at a few mobile phone listings on eBay, a few are listed as cash on collection only. I assume you get no protection whatsoever from eBay when buying under cod, what (if anything) can be done to minimise any risks here. I thinking had over cash, phone is later reported as stolen and barred etc

If so worked up about buying a dodgy item from someone iffy, then why not just do something from the good old days..... save up, and when the money is there, treat yourself to a lovely untouched by criminal hands new one from the shop ?
NB...People online who are here asking advice for "my friend" they really mean "myself" :eek:0 -

You've made so many assumptions here that I can't be bothered to respond to any of them, thank you for your useful input0 -

Assuming that it is a fairly new phone that you are buying, you may be able to get the seller to contact the manufacturer and get the warranty transferred into your name.
If this can be done over the phone at the time of sale, it might help to give you proof of ownership should the previous owner attempt an insurance claim.
A receipt written out and signed by the seller, giving their name and address and the IMEI number of the phone would also be a good idea.
Whilst it might not prevent a scam at a later date, it would give you some ammunition should you decide to take legal action if a scam does occur.
One last point is to make sure that you meet the seller at the address they have registered on ebay and not somewhere like a pub.0
