Quick Question!

Hi,

I bought an item from eBay that arrived today. I don't believe that the item is new as described and certainly wouldn't wear it because of the obvious fault. I messaged the seller straight away and they have messaged back disputing the fact that it is new and asking me to return for a full refund.

Am I now expected to cover the cost of return postage for the item? It was only a cheap purchase (£10 inc postage) so don't know if I should just bin it and put it down to experience. Am a bit annoyed though, I would never sell something that was clearly unfit for sale.

Opinions/help appreciated! Thanks.

The seller doesn't have to pay your return postage but may choose to do so.

I know, annoying and inconvenient but yes you'll need to cover the return postage if you choose to bother.

Unfortunately ebay is just a reflection of people in the real world, some honest/some chancers. At least you get the opportunity to vent via feedback.

If you "just bin it" you'll be losing £10.00. If you return it you'll be out the cost of the return postage as you'll get your £10 refund. Make sure you return by recorded though as you might need to prove you've sent with a tracking number. Proof of postage won't be enough.
The fact that the seller was dishonest in saying the item is new when it isn't, wouldn't fill me with confidence that they'll admit receiving it back if it's not recorded!
  • That did cross my mind about them claiming not to have received it. It also annoyed me that they used their child's disability as a reason to why it was new and had never been worn. The size label has also been cut out that seems strange to me, I would only cut a label out if it was irritating me.

I think I will return it recorded delivery, I should be able to send it large letter to keep postage costs down, at least then I will get my £10 back.

    Thank you!

The cut out label could be off a market stall. My local market has a stall selling m&s end of lines and seconds. They always cut the label out when you hand the money over. I guess it's so you can see its legit but then can't sell on as an original.

OPEN A CASE OF NOT RECEIVED, dont open a not as described where you have the hassle of sending it back, just make no further email contact with the seller any more as she is a dishonest cheating seller.

Would not pretending that it's not arrived make OP a dishonest cheating buyer?

Is returning items for a refund really that much of a chore?

This is fraud. "obtaining money by deception" It will result in a claim against Royal Mail for the cost of the item. Under no circumstances break the law - it's not what money saving is about.

In any case it's too late as they have already told the seller it was received.

It's not the point. They are actually recommending people break the law when other people, maybe kids, read this thread. I find it worrying.
