Rusty springs

Hi, we have just recycled a sofa bed. Someones unloved item.
However the springs on the pull out bed are rusty. I wondered if any one have any more idea's to clean the rust off the MSE way?
So far we have tried white vinegar brushed on with an old toothbrush.
A wire brush
I am also going to try baking soda and water paste.
The rust marks are also on the mattress? idea's.
