hang on though, why don't they talk to both of you about this issue? as they have no idea which one it is do they? and should be aware it could be either of you.

I can't imagine being told off for something and not even mentioning that "2 of us use the pc so we should check when this stuff happened to see which one is responsible"

Makes complete sense to have separate log-ins. I used to work in an office with a log-in and password on my computer atmy desk but sometimes we needed to work upstairs on different project and my log-in followed me. Different people had different levels of access to certain folders/documents... doesn't this happen at your place? If not maybe suggest it?

Also if you can easily find the data trail then surely your employer can? If this cropped up again, ask them to do this to show exactly when these mistakes/amendments/downloads etc were happening. Say if they are blaming you then you would like to see the evidence.

If I were you I'd speak to your job share person and say you'd been asked about documents being amended and ask if they were too. Tell him/her you value your job and that if it were to happen again and you were both spoken to you would ask your employer to ensure they investigated further and that you will be asking for separate log ins.

I would then go to your employer and say the same thing, adding that you believe you do a good job and that you doing this would be the best way forward to ensure efficient working.

That way you're not pointing the finger but you are letting all parties know that you feel you being blamed is unfair and that proof is needed if it happened again.

    Hope this helps.
  • Well everything was fine in the office today. My colleague was also talked to regarding the issue and blamed someone who worked for the company before I started!

Anyway...they had a talking to about a completely separate issue as well this morning so it seems at the moment I don't need to cover my own back.

For the time being all my work I'm saving into the shared folder but emailing myself a copy so that I can go back and double check anything that may arise in the future. I think the whole situation will however sort itself out as they define our roles more clearly in the future.

Thanks to everyone for the advice.

  • No - the situation won't resolve until you have a separate log in. Have you asked for or suggested this yet?

I agree, this issue is only esolved until the next time.

If you don't want to make an issue this time, then as a minimum take a screen print of the files and dates and attach a copy of your timesheet which shows that you could not possibly have been responsible.

This person is not your friend.

    This issue will happen again.

When it does, this person will do all that they can to deflect the blame onto somebody else - you need to be prepared in case it is you !

    Good luck !

Your work-colleague blamed someone who worked for the company before you started and you don't think you need to cover your back?

Please, stop being so naive and ask for a separate log-in to protect yourself while you still can.

From a Line Manager's point of view, personally I would have checked the login times/dates when the errors/discrepancies were made, and checked who was on duty at the time BEFORE I spoke to any members of staff involved, especially if you have a shared login. You need to look for patterns - are these random or on specific days/shifts etc.... This information should all have been forwarded to the Senior Manager who was involved before anyone was spoken to. You have to get your facts straight before you start interviewing/meeting with the staff involved !

Perhaps you should have a quiet word with the Senior Manager involved and say that this has been playing on your mind, and that you have checked the incidents that they spoke to you about, and discovered that they did not occur whilst you were on duty, therefore you are not sure why you are being involved/disciplined.

I would not mention this to your colleague - your Managers will speak to your colleague in due course...

You need to stand your ground in a calm manner, and not come across as aggressive/bolshy.

The truth will out...keep calm and act professionally.
