Drop your colleague in it?

  • 'Hi Boss. Further to the meeting we had on x day; where I was informally reprimanded for x, y or z; I have investigated a little further into the documents in question and, looking at their data trail, it would seem that these were last amended when I wasn't even in the building. As you know, the computer is shared and as such, I would appreciate it if you could investigate further as I am unhappy taking a 'telling off' for something that I haven't actually done'.

Thanks for making my day feel so tedious. Had this been the first episode I wouldn't be as wound up about it as I am.

The fact is that this keeps happening. It is not a one off incident.

Why should I potentially risk my employment to cover someone else?

I've done nothing about it so far. It's not even about just documents being amended and disappearing. There are often downloads on my computer and setting are constantly changed.

You shouldn't, which is why Funky Bold Ribena gave you exactly what you should send to the person you've been discussing this with (the senior person that noticed the problem).

I would create a new user account on the PC if I were you. Give it a nice secure password & move all the documents that need moving to a shared folder or drive.

That way, as long as you remember to log-off before you leave at the end of your shift, your colleague will not be able to use you to cover his back.

Yeah, it's all my fault for making your day so tedious.

If you do nothing about it then nothing will change.

    It's your call.

Get off your high horse. Ribena was trying to help you.

No, you should not cover for your colleague. You should ask that you both have separate log ins created for you in order to follow best practice with data security.

If they refuse, you should tell them what has happened and why you want separate log ins.

Sooner or later, if this continues, you will find yourself without a job.
  • In that case I apologise to Ribena. I read sarcasm in the post that wasn't there.

I've had a pretty bad week in a job that was originally so stress free when I first switched my career and I guess it all came to a head yesterday and I took my frustration out on the wrong person.

I did try speaking to my colleague about the issues later yesterday and they tried to claim that they had seen someone else using the computer. They really are never to blame for anything. It's very frustrating.

Ok, so it was "someone else". Then your colleague won't mind you highlighting the fact the timestamps prove it couldn't have been you!

Not dropping a colleague in it is one thing, actually taking the fall is another. Unless it was something serious like fraud, money laundering etc, I wouldn't actively draw attention to a colleague's shortcomings, but I would never take the blame for something I hadn't done. It always comes back to bite you - bad appraisal, bad reference, etc. Protect yourself, no one else will.

On a side note, sharing one login is silly from a security POV. I would be asking for my own user account!

No - that was a genuine wording to try and resolve your issue.

Don't speak to your colleague. Speak to your manager. Use the wording I gave earlier.

And you definitely need your own log-in which you must start logging out of even if you nip off to make a cuppa or have a loo break.

I'm part time so they use my office after I leave for the day, hence being able to prove without a shadow of a doubt that the mistakes and changes are not mine.

    Are you mad..
