Broad band for Student House?

My daughter is just coming to the end of her first year at Uni! She is due to move into a house in September currently it has no phone and no broadband connection! They all have mobile phones and do not really want a house phone, as they feel it would add to their living costs!
1. Can you get Broadband with out having a housephone? She speaks to us on practically a daily basis using Skype, (which I can recommend) so it is important that we find something in time for the start of the next year.
2. Can anyone recommend a Broadband connection thingy!!!
Thank you in anticipation!

Assuming the area she is in has cable then cable is the only option where you don't have to have a phone (or satellite but that's just silly)

See if cable is available in her area here:

We've been with Virgin down in Plymouth taking the broadband and TV from them, no phone line, you can of course just take their broadband service.
They've generally been OK, it's been slow sometimes due to capacity problems in the area but they've always acknowledged that and we've had financial recompense for that.
Same service is installed in my parents house and runs absolutely fine all the time so that's just issues in the Plymouth area rather than a nationwide problem!
They should also be able to offer some form of student contract for you if you give them a call, they're normally a 12 month minimum contract but we got 9 months paying full price then they allowed us to pay the final 3 months off at £5/month once we'd moved outMake sure you get any agreement like this in writing though!
Also worth pointing out that a wayleave agreement will need to be signed by the landlord to give permission for them to drill through the wall and install the cable. This isn't normally a problem but I'd call Virgin and get the process underway ASAP as it can take a while, especially if you're letting via an agency who have to forward forms to the landlord, etc. it took around 6 weeks to get it all sorted for us (but then the agency are crap!!).
Of course they may be an existing wayleave or cable installation in some houses which simplifies the whole process a bit0 -
You might also be able to get out of the contract by telling them you're moving to a non-cabled area, worked for me a few years back with Telewest.0
