How/Why did you choose your first Current Account?

My first 'proper' Current Account was with Midland (would have been around 1988-1989) and I chose it merely because it was Local. I remember the card had a Switch symbol on the back and for quite a long time I had no idea what it meant.
Although it was a 3in1 card (they called it an Auto Cheque Card) unusually the hologram featured Griffin rather than the familiar image of Shakespeare.
But I think I had some sort of a Cashcard account with Halifax when I was youngster.0 -
My first bank account was at Williams Deacons. I had to have it because I was an employee. I wasn't allowed to have any accounts with banks other than WD. Things were a bit stricter then.0

Stricter? They wouldn't be allowed to get away with that nonsense nowadays.Graduated 16 July 2013 with First Class Honours :jHouse Deposit: £6,493.10 - Cashback Total: £447.670 -
Got a children's savings account with the Coventry because it had good rates and was within walking distance.
Then when I got old enough to need a cash card Coventry didn't offer them so I went to the nearest bank, HSBC. They refused me due to not having any utility bills in my name... didn't get my first bill for another 9 years, way to go HSBC.
Walked down the street a little further and opened an account with Nationwide, been with them ever since.MFiT-T3 :: Reduce mortgage to 80k (86.30%)0 -

When I did work for a bank back in 1993 it was the same, you had to have an account with them and no-one else. If you went over your overdraft then your statement would be sent to your team leader and you could have a possible disciplinary.
I had to do a presentation about the bank to the company I worked for so had to do some research on them. I spoke to people who used to arrange mortgages and one of the questions they asked young couples was if the wife was on the pill or not. It would seriously go against them if the answer was no.0 -
Girobank
IIRC they were the only bank, at the time, that would give me an a cheque book at 16 (fairly sure I had a cheque guarantee card with it too) everyone else, at the time, had a minimum age of 18.
(That makes me feel old)

Mine was with Bank of Scotland, because my parents banked with them and I had a childrens savings account with them. When I moved to England, at 19, I opened an account with Barclays, because there were no BoS branchesDebt free and staying that way! :beer:0

I got a BoS supersaver account with a good interest rate, free piggybank, backpack and an Autoteller card with £50 daily limit.
When I was 16, moved to England and got my first part time job, I opened a Barclays account and they gave me a Connect card. I later found out that I couldn't use every cash machine free of charge like you could in Scotland.Mine was with Bank of Scotland, because my parents banked with them and I had a childrens savings account with them. I think it came (somewhat ironically with a really nice piggy bank.
However the first one I really used was my student account because well free stuff (£100 + railcard), quite a large interest free overdraft and a CC with a 3k limit...0
