Horrible landlord!!!! ending tenancy early.

I would appreciate some advice in renting.
We took on a rental December and specified we only wanting to move in if it was to be a long term tenancy. The estate agents assured us it would be on email and the landlord only wanted six month tenancy first as he had bad tenants in past. (all correspondence by landlord is email as he is in Cambodia)
So we moved in… we have since had numerus house problems….radiator not working in kitchen, house suffering from damp as its old. Had to purchase a 200 pounds humidifier as my partner has asthma and house was so cold etc. shower running hot and cold. Mice in kitchen. Air leaks where cold coming in that we have sealed. Etc etc.
The landlord takes weeks to reply and nothing really gets resolved. we did some light decorating in the meantime as we really did love the house. Wallpapering bedroom and one wall in living room painted. We have now been informed with two months to go on our tenancy the landlord wont be renewing as he wants to move his relatives in!!!!
We have to change the decorating back after only a few months of it been done. We knew it had to be changed back but the landlord had said tenancy would be longterm as stated above.
We are currently trying to get him to allow us to be released early if we find a house as dates may be hard to find around our official moving out date in june. We have also asked because we have spent 100’s fixing his house!!! Would he allow the decorating to remain. Its been 2 weeks since this, we still haven’t had a proper reply – and no doubt he is probably just going to say no. the radiator and shower etc still has been fixed. Fortunately the weather is warming up so kitchen is a lot more bareable now. Before it was literally warmer out side in the winter!! Then in the kitchen.
Im sure we have no leg to stand out as we have nothing in writing really and by law the landlord isn’t breaking anything. Hes just a horrible landlord!!!!
Any advice would be appreciated? May be a case of lesson learned L

I'm afraid he has no obligation to end your contract early or to honour the comment from the agents that it would be for a longer term - he is entitled to insist that you pay and stay for the duration of the contract - no more and no less. Do bear in mind that his circumstances may have changed from when you signed up.
He may be willing to break early if it suits you all, as he may want to move his relatives in earlier, but other than that I am not sure there is a great deal you can do.
Sorry, and good luck in finding a longer term stay next timeSo many glitches, so little time...0 -
I am sorry that you have had such a difficult time and you are absolutely correct that your landlord or his agent should have arranged for you to have heating in the kitchen.
You are however sending out some mixed messages. You say the house is damp and has exacerbated your partners asthma but you also seem to want to stay.
You must be aware that a six month tenancy is just that and you were naive to believe that you would get a longer tenancy, you have made the mistake of believing this was a permenant base.
If renting you are only safe to believe you can stay as long as your agreement, many landlords would be happy to have you as a tenant so move on and forget it.
You agreed to putting the decoration back to how it was so I think that will be what you have to do or have the money for the change taken from your deposit.
Renting someone else's house is a buisness agreement, the landlord does not have to let you leave early as you signed a six month contract.
Is he horrible? Well I think you need to go into your next agreement with your head not your heart!0 -
1. Are you in England / Wales?
2. Did you pay a deposit?
3. If so, has it been protected in one of the deposit schemes AND have you received a multi-page document called the Prescribed Information?
4. How was the 2 months' notice given to you? Was it a notice called a s.21 notice?
5. When did you receive the 2 months' notice?
6. When does your 6 month fixed term expire?0
