Increase Your Internet Speed - XP Pro Version

This only works with Windows XP Pro
Windows stores 20% of your bandwidth for Windows updates, spyware checks and all that other stuff.
Here is a little tweak that will help you override this.
1) Start-> Run-> type gpedit.msc ( You will see Local Computer Policy)
2) Expand the Administrative Templates branch
3) Expand the Network tab.
4) Highlight QoS Packet Scheduler
5) Click on Limit Reservable Bandwidth
6) Check enabled
7) Change Bandwidth limit % to 0 %
Click apply and then restart your pc.

Absolute nonsense. Firstly, QOS is available in both XP Home as well as Pro - it is simply the gpedit.msc that is not available in Home (although you can edit the same registry keys directly in Home, as gpedit does for you in Pro).
Secondly, you can not increase your maximum speed. The QOS only works when a QOS-enabled program asks to take a portion of your bandwidth for a specific task. If it it does not need the full 20%, it does not take it. Once it has completed its task, it hands back whatever bandwidth it was using.
Thirdly, any time you have more than one program using your available bandwidth, your total bandwidth must be divided between those programs, so each of them must run 'more slowly' than if you only had one program running. Nothing special about a QOS-enabled program, other than it is limited to 20% of your total bandwidth.
See the link below for a better explanation, and links to the MS articles about QOS -

Have to agree with Jzpop, I saw this "fix" appear a couple of years ago. It is an urban myth as much as chain letter emails are. I'd be interested in hearing where mjr600 got this information though as the source obviously needs to be informed that it's nonsense.

It seemed to work for me but of course it may have been my mind playing tricks after a couple of cups of coffee, the forum is useful for raising or dashing suggestions such as this, cap duly doffed.0

I was going to say, any perceived speed increases was likely to be some kind of placebo effect. At least this thread can serve as reference in the future. Where did you get the info from?"She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Came off a techieblog from only the other day, guess that these things perpetuate.0

That's what makes a good urban myth. Fascinating stuff when you read about the theory of perpetuating ideas and memes and things."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"
