Paying wages in cash

Hi! If a 17 year old works for me for me (only a handful of hours a week and it's their only job - so do not need to do PAYE or NI) can I pay them using cash and still record this in my accounts as wages paid?

Thank you!

You can pay them in cash if you want to but you still need to register them with hmrc and provide them with wageslips.

You can pay them in any format you wish, providing it is all declared and registered with HMRC.

As soon as you first employ someone, you will need to register as an employer with HMRC if one or more of the following is true:
    • you're paying them at or above the PAYE threshold
    • the employee already has another job
    • they are receiving a state, company or private pension
    • you're paying them at or above the National Insurance Lower Earnings Limit
    • you're providing them with employee benefits

Presumably therefore, if you're only employing a 17 year old and paying them a wage that is below both the PAYE threshold and the NI LEL, then you don't have to worry about HMRC, PAYE, and all that malarkey.
