Hi

We're about to move into our newly purchased house and the vendors have left us details of who they had their gas and electricity with. I know that we'll need to ring them to give them a final reading as we move in, but what about us - is it more straight forward to sign up with them short term or is it just as easy/quick to go with another supplier.

We obviously need power straight away but I'm not sure of the best way to get started.

Sorry if it's a dumb !!! question but trying to think of everything in preparation.

When you move into a new property, you are automatically on a 'deemed supply' with the existing suppliers. They'll put you on an ordinary tariff, and as you say you must ring them up with opening readings when you move in (take photos or make a record you can save somewhere as you might need to refer back to it later).

If you want to stay with the existing supplier, you can ask to be transferred onto a different tariff immediately. If you want to go to another supplier, ask the new supplier to transfer you. It will take a few weeks to take place, and the existing supplier supplies you in the meantime, on the deemed tariff.
  • Thanks for your quick reply really appreciate it.

The power will already be on, unless you're buying a property that has been disconnected.
You can't switch suppliers until you have an account with the existing suppliers, as above.
