I've just put in 5 more codes to the Dr Oetkers site and all the emails came through immediately. I think I shall stick with 10, especially considering the trouble using the coupons today in T's - one woman even thought they should be double sided!!! I showed them the box and told them they had to be printed off, must have taken about 10 minutes before they were finally convinced! I feel another argument coming on tomorrow!!!!

    Hi.
Are you using just 1 email addy or more please.

  • Following the golden rules not only cuts the risk of dying from cancer by 20 per cent, it also protects against a string of other killer diseases.
The risk of lung disease is halved and heart attacks slashed by 44 per cent.

All it takes is a few simple changes to diet and lifestyle, the study of nearly 380,000 people by scientists at Imperial College London shows.
Those who stick closely to the rules, which also govern exercise and alcohol consumption, will cut their risk of dying from any of the major circulatory or respiratory diseases, including stroke and angina, by at least 34 per cent.

The study confi rms that relatively small changes to everyday life can have profound effects. The rules were drawn up six years ago by the World Cancer Research Fund and American Institute for Cancer Research.

Now, by studying patients across nine European countries, the British scientists have shown that they help people live longer by reducing the risk of death from many other causes as well as cancer.
    The seven rules are:

1.Be as lean as possible without becoming underweight.

2.Be physically active for at least 30 minutes every day.

3.Limit consumption of energy-dense foods – those high in fat or added sugar and low in fibre – and avoid sugary drinks.

4.Eat a variety of vegetables, fruit, wholegrains and pulses such as beans. As well as five portions of fruit and veg a day, try to eat wholegrains with each meal.

5.Limit consumption of red meat such as beef, pork and lamb to 500g cooked weight a week and avoid processed meats such as ham, salami and bacon.

6.Limit alcoholic drinks to two for men and one for women a day.

7.It is best for mothers to breast feed exclusively for up to six months.
If you eat a healthy, balanced diet filled with fruit and veg, stay active, stop smoking and maintain a healthy weight you’ll be well on the way to preventing a heart attack or stroke.
Maureen Talbot, senior cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation
The rules that had the most impact on health were number one, on body weight, and number four, on eating lots of fruit and vegetables. The researchers concluded: “The results of this study suggest that following the recommendations could significantly increase longevity.”

Lead researcher Dr Teresa Norat said: “This large European study is the first that shows there is a strong association between following the recommendations and a reduced risk of dying from cancer, circulatory diseases and respiratory diseases.

“Now further research is needed in other large populations to confirm these findings.” The study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, is the first to examine breastfeeding as part of a combination of lifestyle changes to see what effect it has on risk of dying.

It showed that women who breastfed for at least six months had a reduced risk of death from cancer (10 per cent) and circulatory disease (17 per cent).

Commenting on the findings, Maureen Talbot, senior cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation, said: “Cancer and heart disease share some common risk factors so to find cancer prevention advice might help reduce heart disease risk isn’t entirely surprising.

“The association found between breastfeeding and a lower heart risk among women is interesting and needs further exploration, but this research doesn’t change our advice for a healthy heart.

“If you eat a healthy, balanced diet filled with fruit and veg, stay active, stop smoking and maintain a healthy weight you’ll be well on the way to preventing a heart attack or stroke.”

Dr Panagiota Mitrou, Deputy Head of Science at the World Cancer Research Fund, which helped draw up the rules, said: “This study by the team at Imperial College demonstrates in real terms the value of our recommendations in preventing deaths from a range of common diseases, not just cancer.

“This evidence also highlights the importance of aspects of the Government’s public health policy around increasing fruit and vegetable consumption, promoting breastfeeding and curbing alcohol abuse.”
