I might be on my own here, but I'd prefer my estate to go to the general good, than to some obscure offspring of a an obscure offspring of a relation who did not bother with me, or vice versa.

Then you should make a will.

Would you be doing this for free or are you attempting to get a cut for yourself?

A heir hunter contacted my mother and her cousin about ten years ago,it was my great grandmothers nephew.
They wanted the usual cut but then said that the money could not be released overseas( he was from Manitoba) so they did'nt bother.
I am still intrigued as to what happened to the money.

that sounds like they could not br bothered. the tv program has had folks from a number of none uk countries getting their share

State the obvious. Already done. With instruction for a disaster scenario and the immediate family being killed.

Estate to one of my sisters, one of OH's brothers and a niece and a nephew. The rest don't matter.

Going to up date as soon as grandson 2 arrives.

I suppose you're right, I just don't like the way they've approached my Mum giving her no info etc.

If they give her much info then it would be easier for her to find out the full details and the company has wasted all their efforts.

What if one of the siblings signs up, gets the details, all will inherit their share once they know the details and then they can share the cost of the one inheritor's 30%.
loose does not rhyme with choose but lose does and is the word you meant to write.

Thats a very good idea. I wonder if it would work? I don't see any reason why it wouldn't

My granddad has recently benefited from an estate through one of these companies.

TBh is was done quite sensitively. They contacted my mum and asked her all of the questions about the family and my granddad first, to establish they had the correct person. They didn't want to upset my granddad (if he was very ill etc...) with the news of this cousins death. So my mum was asked if it was ok to contact him directly.

Once it was established that he was the right person they were looking for, they came to visit and told him who is was, but not the value of the estate. It was then left up to him to decide whether to sign or not.

It has taken a few months for everything to be finalised. It was just decided that it was easier for them to manage it, and without their contact we wouldn't have known about it anyway.

They also sent over a package of photos/documents that were in his cousins possession which was lovely.

So you have to pay some third party to get an inheritance you are legally entitled to ???

I bet you are one of these people who moans about paying money to use cashpoints in shops because "I'm not paying to get my own money", totally failing to realise that you are not only receiving your own money but the service of getting that money to you, which is what you are actually paying for.

I was contacted around 6 weeks ago by 5 different heir hunting companies. Two by phone and three in writing - all on the same day.

They told me straight away who the deceased was, where he lived and the date he died. He was my late fathers cousin who, sadly, I had not known. They said they didn't know the amount of the estate but said it would be over £500.

The difference was all 5 companies only asked for 10% which I thought was very reasonable. If it hadn't been for them I wouldn't have known anything about it.

I signed up with one of them and I am awaiting the result. More in hope than anticipation but however much or little it is it's a bonus.

30% does seem a little high.
