Tarmacing - is estimate fair?

Hi there

I want to have an area of lawn removed and tarmaced so that it blends in with our existing drive. The area is 3 meters wide and 6 meters long, I was given a rough estimate over the phone of £1000+VAT. Do you think this price is fair?
They are coming to give me a proper quote next week and I want to know what sort of questions I should be asking as I haven't a clue what's involved?
After seeing programmes like rogue traders I want to make sure that I don't "employ" a cowboy!!
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

6 meters long and 3 1/2 wide we were quoted £850

I did post on this board to see if it was fair but i didn't get any replys ,so hope mine helps a bit.
  • Thanks for your reply pinkwitch, did this quote include VAT?
Did you have the work done and if so what did your price include ie removal & disposal of old lawn, materials and labour etc?
Sorry for all the questions but don't want to get ripped off (I know there are a few cowboys out there). Obviously I intend to get other quotes as well to compare.

Make sure that you both agree as to what is included in the quote and get it written down. Why don't you ask if they've done similar work in the area? its then easy enough to ask the house owners if they were satisfied with the work.
