Finding steels beams/RSJ..Help!

Hi Guys,

I am in the middle of home renovation and facing some serious issues finding steam beam suppliers who can provide the necessary steels etc and also install it .My builder who is carrying out the work itself is finding it difficult to find it for the right price. The steel fabricators who previously agreed to supply has suddenly changed their minds for some unknown reasons.

I am attaching the structural engineers calculations and plans for the 4RSJ's which will support the chimney breast and one load bearing wall in my ground floor living room.

Could some who has knowledge of the RSJ and bearing plates cost + installation (i.e. Bolting velding/fitted ready for my builder to box it) shed some light please. I am based in Bromley (Kent)

I am really having a trouble figuring out the cost for the steels.
My friend says £ 40/m for steel and £500 installation (lifting and bolting) cost but the steel fabricators are quoting me £4000 for the same thing.

Any help will be really appreciated, without this I cannot figure out my budget for rest of the work.

Many thanks.

Cost wise we have just bought
    178 x 102 x 19 ub grade 43 steel (2no cut to 3200mm inc drilling at 600mm centres as specified)
    These have cost us £196.
I have no real idea about costings for steel etc, other than our builder used his regular builders merchants and they supplied it. My builder is installing it, which I thought was the norm, why does your builder not want to install them?

Wm Twiggs in Matlock are my nearest, don't know where you are?

I think you will have difficulty in finding 1 outfit that will both supply and fit, they will be steel factor and fabricators, not build expert.

The 1 I mentioned are supplier to most of the engineering companies around here, and also to the build trade, they will fabricate to any drawing. You need to find someone like that.;)

PS, the builders I know are quite capable of drilling a girder or 2 and bolting them together, I'd be a little suspect of your builder to be honest.:A
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

Your friend's quote sounds like a good one, can't he do the work or alternatively tell you which company he was basing his quotes on?
