My desktop has finally had its chips and can't be resurrected
I'm looking to get a replacement. My budget is £400.
A ready built PC is what I'm after.
I'd like a decent warrantee and preferably not a 'return to base' one.
I don't do gaming but do play the odd game, though none of this online stuff.
I've had a look at aria, dino, chillblast and mesh for ideas but lost the plot completely when it came to configuring the PC. Haven't a clue as to what CPU or mobo would be best to go for.
Do I go for Windows 7 or windows 8?
Oh and I do want it to run quiet!
Any help would be ever so much appreciated before I loose the will to live :A

8 is a diaster zone have look for reviews basically tablet mode and desktop mode and can't carry info thru from one to the other. regards running quiet you want a ssd hard drive but they don't come cheap!
also you thought of a lappy at all as desktops are now getting very old unless you need a desk taking all the space up?0 -

Laptops are expensive for what they are, compared to the equivalent desktop. They are expensive to repair and when they die you have to buy a complete new one - with a desk top you just replace the bit that died: keyboard, monitor, etc, etc
........and of course, laptops are so easy to drop, lose or get nicked.0 -
Thanks, Basil, I'll avoid win 8 in that case
I don't like laptops and would prefer to sit happily at my desk

Expect updates to reintroduce booting direct to Desktop and in the meantime, a Start button.
I don't ever upgrade a Microsoft OS until the first service pack has been introduced. Wouldn't dream of paying to be their guinea pig.
Notwithstanding, there is a new DELL thread running here.0 -
the main thing will be which 'odd' game do you play, are we talking about a bit of minecraft, sims, or crysis 3?
anyway with a £400 budget you will have to compromise somewhere which is why finding out which game you like to play could make a difference, also what other stuff do you use it for ie video editing, photoshop, or just office and internet?Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0 -
I have been using Windows 8 for about 8 months without any issues. It is quick to load, plenty of apps to install, and once you are used to the different layout it is easy to use.
I also know that HP are offering a £100 cashback on certain laptops bringing the cost down to £269 (HP 650 on ebuyer) which is a bargain.
Hope you get sorted.

Just light stuff, nothing CPU or graphic intensivegonzo127 wrote:which 'odd' game do you play
I do a fair bit of photoshop and some video editing but most of the time it's office and internet usage.0 -
I suggest you go for AMD A10-5800K
This will be in your budget. But I don't know what PSU it use.

Or go for overclockers, it is £440, but it has a better case and PSU

I would pay extra for Windows XP

Or run XP in a virtual machine under any OS. Perhaps a little OTT :-)albionrovers wrote: »I would pay extra for Windows XP
