I cancelled my hsbc credit card a few years ago to avoid interest rate hike and carried on paying it off..I don't bank with hsbc but had an online account that I could check before my statement arrived.
Paid it off on the 20th wasn't due til the 8th May I did online banking from my Barclays account but I still like to check it was paid and I wanted to see a 0000 balance
When I went to check it was locked down when I rang up was told as the account was paid it was automatically closed down.
Would have been nice to be warned this would happen and I am bound to have a couple of pounds interest to pay so I suppose I can't do this online now.
Anyone know if this is what happens ?

Surely if they closed it then there would be no outstanding payments?0

From what I have picked up on here I thought they would be interest on the £355 that I paid from the 9th when the statement was generated til 20th when I paid it .YouGov
