I used to work for AOL (America Off Line) there software is based on Internet Explorer they bought the rights to use the IE engine and put their front end on it, and its so slow its a nightmare plus they have their own Dial Up On Demand adapter that causes conflicts I was testing Beta 6 and when I put it on my PC at work it stopped sound coming through my speakers so I uninstalled it and speakers worked fine re installed no sound again informed my manager who just laughed and said they would ship it anyway, since then ive never really liked the software, bugs "n" all.
    Mr Skint,

I have a feeling we must have been working in the same office at the same time.... I wasn't supporting AOL calls but Nutscrape and Compuserve instead.

I read a rumour about 12 months ago that AOL was going to use the mozilla / netscape code to base its AOL software on.

Have never used AOL since i left and stopped getting free dial up access, amazing the amount of people who ask you questions about it though.

Contraversial but I have been with AOL for years and nothing to complain about.

    Maybe I should duck now!!!!!!!!!
I'm with you, i have been with them for a few years now, got annoyed with BT Internet and decided to give AOL a try and i've never looked back. The software is memory hungry, but since i got a wireless modem and router i only open it to check my emails and talk to people on IM. I have got several of my friends onto AOL mainly due to the fact that they don't limit the time you are online if you are on dial up, or the ammount you can download, always forgot to take advantage of the cash for reconmending a friend. I don't tend to use my email account for sending emails, i just use my gmail account.
Sometimes i surprise myself by being right.
  • AOL is definitely RUBBISH, big time. I refuse to email anybody with an AOL address since they decided my email address was sending SPAM (and it bloody well wasn't) and place an embargo on my which my own ISP had to get lifted. My advice: don't accept AOL email and don't send emails to AOL addresses. The head of Which on Line (A Mr Stephens) appeared on Working Lunch several years ago and basically accused AOL of having such rubbish software that, one installed, the only way of getting rid of it was to wipe the hard disk! And he is an IT consultant these days.

ISP's should stick to the same ISO stack for maximum compatibiltiy. I cannot think why the Boss of AOL would use a different stack.

Also, ISP's should ALWAYS give you a choice of software to use. AOL push certain software onto customers. Doesnt AOL even block some websites from been accessed? I could be wrong......

I was with AOL fom 1995 and have just changed to Nildram.

    OK list of complaints:-

    1. Was overseas for a year cancelled my account with the promise that when I returned I could have my log in name back.......NO...even though apparently they don't reissue.

    2. Signed up for 510 broadband for 12 months (expired december) was offered a deal at same for another 12 months which I didn't respond to in time. Contract expoired and they jacked me up to £25/month. I tried on numerous occasions to get a deal. NO was the answer.

    3. I use EBay a lot as a buyer and seller AOL blocked a huge percentage of my emails to customers as bulk mail and spam this was nightmare and caused quite a few avoidable arguments with sellers.

    4. The AOL software is enormous and slows your PC right down and is very difficult to get rid off!! My geeky friends kept telling me I was mad running it!!

    5. No newsgroups!!

    So...

I got a new PC and did not load the AOL crap software and instead logged on direct. So after a few more attempts at getting reduced prices I moved. Nildram have some good offers but I chose the 2.2M for £25. Great stuff!!
  • I still remember 6 or 7 years ago , and i used to get regular phone bills over £250+ a month for internet access (pence/minute charge). Then AOL shook up the ISP market with their 1p a minute charge, and later unlimited flat fee access:) Today, unlimited broadband with no download caps...unlike many ISPs. Yes they've dropped usenet groups, mostly because of clueless people posting inappropriately, but while they lasted they had one of the best retention (30days) amongst the news servers. Yes there are broadband suppliers still offering usenet, but how many days retention? One, two or three days? For serious downloaders there was really only one route... Easynews, Giganews etc.
  • Lately I haven't been getting tons of email from people outside aol ... and they do nothing about it. I will be ditching them very soon. I don't know why I've waited so long.
