when does food become fat?

    I think sugar is very easily demonised these days. Just like Calories.

    Calories are a unit of energy and the body needs energy to function. The Gov' recommend 2000cals (female) per day to maintain your weight. But that's a load of rubbish. If you weigh 50st and consumed 2000cals every day you'd soon slim down. If you weighed 6st you'd gain weight.

    Never is the weight of the person who needs 2000cals listed. Also nothing is said about how physical this person is. If you never leave your bed you will gain weight. If you are a cycle courier (insert very active job) you'll probably loose weight on 2000.

    It's all so very generalised in an attempt to combat obesity.

    Sugar. So cola contains loads of sugar and we all know it's bad for you, but fruit contains loads of sugar too! yet fruit is amazing for you. Again sugar is very much generalised. Usually on a smoothie there will be a little note saying "sugars naturally found in fruit". Really we should separate refined sugar from natural sugar on labels just like they do with saturated fat/trans fat/mono saturated fat/etc.

    I always remember "(body) fat burns in a carb flame". so I eat carbs to perform hard on my bike in the hope some of my body fat will get burnt along the way too.

    Rest is an important part of any hard exercise regime. I train HARD 4 days a week and do something gentle like walking or yoga on the other days. If I didn't, my muscles would be injured.

    We're not machines.

    It's not a load of rubbish you have misunderstood the official line. 2000 calories is for an average female and that caveat absolutely IS specified, most of the guidelines are for average people because they are designed on a population not an individual basis.

    The average person is sedentary, so it only accounts for a 'normal' amount of lifestyle activity. There are amendments to the standard guidelines for different groups - for those who exercise, for vegetarians and so on. The basics are online and more detailed versions are/ should be used by health or fitness professionals when doing tailored programmes for clients/ patients.

    Whist I agree with you on carbs being an important part of a healthy training diet for most, I don't on sugars. Government recommendations are also for maximum 10% of daily calories to come from foods with added sugar/ added fats, that's 150-200cals for a dieting female who exercises which is a tiny amount.

    Fruit certainly has some health benefits but most authorities worldwide including many governments recommend we skew our intake towards vegetables, and there is research flagging up negative effects from the fruit sugar fructose. I generally encourage clients to eat low sugar high antioxidant fruits like berries. Double benefit is there are few blue/ purple produce items, so blackberries, blackcurrants and blueberries can help people achieve that balance. Furthermore I know the dentists who post on MSE are keen to discourage sugar intake, including that from fruit. IME families are tending to pick pale coloured, higher sugar, lower nutrient fruits such as bananas, apples and green grapes.

    Personally with nutrition clients I encourage switching away from carbs which turn to blood sugar quickly and towards those that are slowly absorbed - so much less wheat white potatoes and rice, far more beans lentils low sugar fruit and non starchy vegetables.

    1. If you only ate 400 calories a day when you needed 1500 to maintain your weight you would lose weight, although maintaining a calorie deficit of that size wouldn't be a good idea and you'd probably end up snacking.

    2. It'd take longer. I don't know how much longer, but generally people become overweight by overeating by only a small amount over a long period of time.

    Eat lots of vegetables; take frequent exercise that you enjoy; go easy on the sugar and convenience food; give it time. Anything else is secondary.
