think ive killed my car stereo.....

Hi folks,

Recently bought a Mitsubishi Grandis.

Radio reception has been none existent. Was told these cars have an FM modulator as they have a DVD player in the roof and its probably the FM modulator which is faulty. Its extremely difficult to get at modulator without removing the dash.

So, I decided to place a paper clip in the aerial socket whilst the unit was powered up.this immediately gave me an 90% clear signal, but without the aerial plug in I can't receive sound from the DVD through the speakers. So I plugged the aerial in and was trying to arrange the paper clip in a stable position when all of a sudden I lost power to the stereo. I have checked the radio fuse under the bonnet and that is OK. Have I managed to blow the stereo? On the stereo there is a 'display' button that toggles between mpg/mph/average mpg/average mpg on the main display and this still works? Do I need a new stereo or is there a simple remedy?

Thanks for any advice,
Fill

I'm not sure but it sounds like something in the stereo may have blown or tripped out.

Are you able to disconnect the stereo from the battery and leave it for a minute or two before re-connecting it? That might reset anything that has "tripped out" to protect the stereo. N.B. A lot of stereos I've seen have some crazy anti-theft measures that require you to type in a certain code once it's lost power. So make sure you read the manual and have the code ready if you need one otherwise you might not be able to use it at all!

Otherwise, the stereo might have an internal fuse that has blown. I'm not really familiar with car stereos (so this is all guesswork!), but my hi-fi amp has several internal fuses that have (on rare occasions) blown.

Maybe someone in the know has some better suggestions...?

+1 for the internal fuse, although it is invariably located externally next to the main connector block on the back of the head unit and will be of the "mini blade" variety.
Understeer is when you hit a wall with the front of your car
Oversteer is when you hit a wall with the back of your car
Horsepower is how fast your car hits the wall
Torque is how far your car sends the wall across the field once you've hit it

    Thanks guys.

There's nothing externally that looks like a fuse? Also managed to get the casing off and still can't locate a fuse?! Any ideas?
