Blocked Sink

Hello All!

Please could someone give me some advice on how to resolve a blocked sink in the kitchen?

Background:
  • Live on the top floor of a 3 level block of flats (Leasehold not renting so do have a management company but they are always reluctant to help with issues)
  • Sink has been blocked (well INCREDIBLY slowly draining) in the kitchen for a week now
  • Sink in bathroom no issues at all
  • Bath in bathroom - slightly slow but that's normal hair build up!
  • Washing machine 3 months old so highly unlikely to be causing the issue with blocked fluff etc

I have tried Mr Muscle Foam and Gel, Domestos Sink Unblocker and Buster products but to no avail.

Have taken off the u-bend and checking nothing in there - so assume this blockage is further down....

I now need recommendations as to what to try next!

One Shot drain cleaner, which is actually sulphuric acid.

Likely to be where the kitchen waste pipe enter the downpipe.

Often depending on type of connection and age crap accumulates there?

A plumbers Snake/Worm (no sassy comments please even if it is a tool :rotfl:), like this> http://www.tooled-up.com/product/monument-3351g-drill-snake-15ft-snake/6661/?Referrer=googleproductlisting&gclid=CInlkr7E4bYCFdHMtAodz1sAIA <will often do the trick, if not its a strip back to the joint and use something more solid, or replace:(

haven't tried a plunger yet (haven't actually got one!) so that may be my next port of call.....and I suspect a call to Daddy to ask if he has any plumbing tools like the one mentioned above.

Does it work? I'm assuming you have tried it before....did you have a heavily blocked sink?

    Thank you

Mechanical removal is always better than chemical removal. And with the one or two basic tools it's easy.

  • Help Please!

I have a slow draining bath, I have gone down all the usual routes: Plunger/Chemicals (One Shot, and another hardcore one)/Drain spring and I'm running out of options.

To use the drain spring rather than going through the plug hole I took off the P trap and went straight into the pipes. The P trap was astonishingly clean! The spring went in a long way maybe 3 metres meeting only resistance at what I assume were the bends. (I'm not sure I got around the final bend) All to no avail.

The problem is I can't access the other end as it's all boxed in behind the sink and toilet etc. So have to go in from the bath end.

I REALLY don't want to call out a plumber as I'm sure they'll only try the same things before deciding to remove half my bathroom, taking a day to take it apart and put it back together again and charge me accordingly.

The blockage has been slowly building up over some months and normally a little chemical unblocker and some plunging frees it up. This time we went on holiday for a week came back and presumably the soapy hairy blockage has hardened up somewhat over the coarse of the week without water running through.

Weird thing is that when I fill up the tub and unplug the water doesn't drop significantly as it fills the pipes up to the point of blockage it's just slow straight away. Also there are lots of gurglings for quite some time after the water finally drains away.

    Any ideas gratefully received.

You can cut the pipe closest to the boxed in area and then get a spring in there then close it up with a coupler. Or start removing the panels. I've seen situations where waste pipe was installed to a gradual drop and then up to the soil pipe - dodgy builder style.
  • Thanks for the suggestion but due to the bath position even that isn't really possible. I'd have to unbox behind the sink. However the spring is long enough so not sure this would help anyway. it's just that I come up against a stop and no amount of turning helps move it. I guess potentially it could be because the force I'm applying is decreased along the nearly 4 metres of spring that is down the drain. So the struggle is getting the spring to get past what is either the blockage, or the last corner before the pipe meets the main waste.god only knows how the blockage got so far down before coming to a halt.
