Dell power adaptor

Hi
It seems my power cable for my laptop is broke. Its the transformer bit that is the problem and only Dell sell the 3 prong type apparently. However, I have used a different cable altogether (borrowed) that works fine, is the right voltage and so on. Does using a non-Dell cable pose any risks? I'm just thinking it might be cheaper to buy a whole new cable (the transformer bit and other bit) from another shop than to buy the one bit I actually need from dell.
Hope this makes sense. As you may have guessed, I know next to nothing about computers.
Cheers in advance.

If its the same voltage and current, and connected to the same source, then it should be fine

you can search by model number to ensure that you are buying the right one e.g. my dell 1501 has a power supply no. PA-120
