Strange phone calls?

Hope this is the correct board.

We keep receiving telephone calls to our landline, when we pick up we get the dial tone as if we are ringing someone? Hope that makes sense. We of course immediately hang up. This happens most days sometimes twice a day. Does anyone have any idea what it could be and how we stop it? We are ex directory and are registered with the TPS.

They are cold calls, what generally happens is a computer rings your number on the chance you will answer it. If answered, the call is re-directed to one of the sales callers who answers their ringing phone in order to sell you the junk\service they are desperate to sell you.

    Thank you for responding.

It is so annoying and distracting, perhaps I should speak with whoever and give them a piece of my mind though doubt it would have any impact.

Yes I do have caller ID but if I don't have my specs on I can't see it;( Will need to be more careful in future. Just annoys me that there seems nothing can be done to stop these nuisance calls.

If you have a digital handset, the number may be stored in a call list.

We get a lot of unwanted calls but I was actually quite shocked when I happened to be home for a change on a week day recently how many times our phone actually rang. None of them were calls I wanted and I ignored all of them.

Sounds like a line fault to me, causing the phone to ring.

I work for a WLR supplier and it's quite common.

I was going to say it could be a line fault! for some reason at one time my phone would ring three times and then stop - on the rare occasions I picked it up it would just have the dial tone. It was a fault on the line and was soon fixed.
