new seller and I've had an MC018

I've just started selling a few items of furniture and have asked advice on here and researched beforehand. I have a wicker/cane chair which I know for a fact is at least 50 years old and may be a Lloyd Loom chair.

However on searching other similar items I noticed people put "Lloyd Loom style chair" so I thought I'd err on the side of caution. I put two good photographs so people could see it as well as possible.

Now today I've had an email saying my listing has been removed for Brand Name Misuse even though there were others listed the same way and I may have to take a tutorial before I can list anything else!

As I've only just started selling items is this likely to cause any problems with how future buyers view what I put on ebay? I'll certainly make sure I don't make the same mistake again!

The tutorial is stupid my dad had to do it once...a few questions that if you don't know you can google the answar.

Most likey someone doing the exact same thing as you reported you so thiers would sell better.

    Wouldn't worry to much.
People don't know what they want until you show them.

Well although furniture seems a bit of an odd example, you only have to go back to the days when people were selling "MP3 player NOT ipod" to see how annoying that could get for eBay's customers. I think they apply the rule that if it helps customers find what they want, like, "Carver" style chair, then it's helpfull whereas using a brand name that it isn't or may, or may not be, doesn't help the customer. What the other people are doing may get picked up later or maybe they reported you, who knows.

A real Lloyd loom chair will have metal thread woven in to it, so check with a magnet

Next time, be sure of what you are selling. Don't guess. It's annoying for people looking for the genuine article.

Thanks for the advice. However, I was sure of what I was selling - it was a Wicker Chair in the Lloyd Loom style. I didn't call it a Lloyd Loom Chair but I now realise I should just have called it a wicker chair.

My main query was why my listing was cancelled whereas there are other listings phrased in the same way.

But in your opening post you clearly stated that the chair may have been a Lloyd Loom, hence the comment from Strapped.
Either you were sure of what you were selling or you weren't.

Because ebay only act on reported listings. Yours was reported and the others were not.

As above, some people get pulled and some don't. Exactly the same as seeing some people exceed the speed limit an dget a ticket and others don't.

I would keep an eagle eye on yoru expanded dashboard now as a strike is a worry for a new seller and you need to ensure that you don't get any other issues or warnings now and endanger your account.

Thank you for explaining that to me Soolin. For some reason I had imagined that perhaps a computer programme picked up certain words - I hadn't realised it could be an individual.

I am worried this will have an effect as I am only selling items I inherited when a dear friend recently died and I want to do it right. The items are at her house which is having to be cleared and I have just waited nearly 2 hours for a buyer who won a large item very cheaply in the auction and then didn't turn up at the time he specified despite my sending texts as to where he was.

I realise I will now have to tread carefully and try to rearrange another time and hope he turns up or at least contacts me if there is a problem.

By the way your mention of keeping an eye on my Expanded Seller Dashboard - I've looked up this and it seems to say I only get one when I have 10 detailed seller ratings. I've only sold 3 items so far and just hope the remainder go well.

Many thanks to all on this thread for your help and advice to a total novice.
  • You were just unlucky.
Most likely someone who is selling a lot of LL or LL style chairs who reported you. However it could also be Lloyd Loom themselves.

I would advise you to avoid using the word "style" IN THE TITLE.

Just to make you feel a bit better I can say that in some Ebay categories up to 50% of items listed are mis-attributed to a "popular" maker, most often through ignorance, but sometimes as a selling ploy (which can back-fire). Where those makers are no longer in existence there's nobody who can enforce their VERO rights to authenticity.

Best to look for an exact match for your item being sold by an experienced seller before attributing a maker. This should also give you an idea of how much to expect for it, taking account of differences in condition etc. Having said that even experienced sellers can get it wrong but at least you will have tried.
