How to Insure Child Car Seats and Roofboxes

Hi, This is my first post.

I have experienced some difficulties in getting insurance for certain Motor Vehicle Accessories. I recognise that this is partly due to my circumstances however I cannot be alone in facing this challenge.

My Scenario:
I am a company car driver. My company car can be used for private trips as well as business ones. The vehicle has the required TP insurance but my company self insures for AD (Own Damage).

I have household buildings and contents cover with UPP (Unspecified Personal Possessions) and some specific Valuables cover.

I would like to ensure that my Roof Bars and Roof box in addition to my child ISOFIX car seats are covered whilst they are on my company car (the company permit such articles).

The Issue:
Roof Bars and boxes are not contents or UPP or Valuables
Car Seats may be contents or UPP but not once they are attached to the vehicle.
My company has no interest in providing cover for employees personal effects or motor accessories whilst attached to the vehicle.
I am uninsured for these items placing me at a financial risk in the region of £900.

General investigations
I have spoken with a few insurers in the hope that by specifically insuring the goods this would provide the needed cover - the items cannot be insured in this manner (I cannot add them as Valuables).

Generally such accessories are covered under the Comprehensive section of a Motor Vehicle Policy however that does not address my need.

Help:
Has anyone experienced this issue before?
Do you know where I would be able to place such a risk (at an affordable premium?

TBH as you say, they are normally covered under a comprehensive motor insurance as accessories but if your company policy is RTO/TPO/TPFT cover only then clearly this isnt an option for you.

The first question would be under your home insurance's Personal Possessions if cover can be provided given this is normally All Risks and you can confirm there is no cover from the Motor insurers.

If for some reason it isn't covered by them then I suspect you are going to be in a situation where you need a specialist policy in which case the premiums are simply not going to be sensible compared to the risk you are carrying.

Does the fleet policy have cover for Employees Personal Belongings?

Often this is a separate section to the vehicle damage (may not provide enough cover for you anyway).

Other than that, I think you need an understanding home insurer.
  • I also care about this kind of questions, thanks for sharing the suggestions here.
