Book one of the many budget hotels in Manchester city centre (travelodge/hiexpress/ibis/premier travelinn etc etc, probably around £40 a night for a room. Get the metrolink (tram) to the ground, about 5 mins ride. There's not a great deal to do around Old Trafford and any B&B's around there are a bit of a gamble. Loads of stuff to do in the city centre as well, bars, restaurants, science & industry museum etc etc etc

It depends how close to the centre of Brum you are. It is easier to get to Old Trafford from the train station using the Metrolink but then its not far to walk from the coach station to Piccadilly Gardens to get the tram. So depends which is cheapest...

Not sure if you'd get it in time, but if you follow this link you can get a Manchester discount card, and one of the current offers is 50% off the stadium tour. Might be worth trying to apply for one for each of you.
