Congratulations. 50% of the way there. :D

the socket set will no doubt come in handy in the future.

The grease will probably be lithium grease to prevent corrosion, but Vaseline should do. It's not compulsory, anyway.

........Jeez, I feel like a gender stereotype - but honest we just did cooking and dressmaking when I was at school in the dark ages. Car engines are a total mystery to me.

Hmmm, cooking & dressmaking or spending way too much of the last 30 years out in all weathers fixing assorted cars?

    Tricky one.......

I am working on the principle that if I could get the old one out, I can put the new one in. I'm hoping that that greasy stuff on the contacts is plain old vaseline...

It might be some special kind of grease if the car is fairly new, but Vaseline will be fine. When you put the new battery in, make sure the posts/terminals are well-covered in it, as this will help prevent corrosion. As Haynes will tell you, "reassembly is the reverse of removal". Make sure the battery is securely fastened down, and the terminals are firmly tightened (and the right way round).

I take my hat off to you for having a go, and not playing helpless. It sounds to me as if you are on the brink of starting a new life, and this is the way to go. None of us is born knowing this stuff, and sometimes asking and doing is the only way to learn. Good luck.

Yep, building a new life is what it's all about. No point in sitting about moping.

And the battery is in, the car works and the radio code re-entered. I didn't put vaseline on the posts though, so will go back and do that. I am totally amazed at myself - but couldn't have done it without all the help here.
