car clamped on private property

My car was clamped on private property today (university campus). I fully admit I shouldn’t have parked there but ‘everyone else does’ and I have done so for about 2 years without hassle (I know that’s not a particularly good excuse! :o )

Anyway, does anyone know (or know where I can find) details of the law about clamping? I thought there had to be warning signs up (there are defiantly none).

When I went out to see the car (mine had already been done but they were doing others) there was a security man there and he agreed that the clamping wasn’t legal but claimed he was just doing as he was told!!!

I’m torn between paying the fine (£30) and accepting that its been a pretty good deal for 2 years parking - or challenging them because the clamping might be illegal.
