Just take them up - we moved into our house just after Christmas this year and the house stank - smoke, cats, grime and filth. Tried vacuuming and steaming but to no avail - it was as pointless as rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic!! We pulled up ALL the carpets , lived with floorboards for a few weeks, got most of house re-carpeted (not cheap but well worth it and not as expensive as I thought after shopping around for good deals!) but still down to floorboards in bathroom and original lino in kitchen for now - not ideal but certainly liveable with for a few months till our bank balance gets back on track!

Thankfully no maggots found when pulling up carpet but newspaper had been used as underlay (the bloke who had the house before us was tight to say the least!), yellow with age and when we looked closer the dates on the paper were from 1972!!! Carpets down for a grand total of over 34 years.... euughhhhh! Surely deserving of an entry in the Guiness Book of Records?!;)
