Beware of PAYPAL taking payments from CC's

Options
Hi guys.

Just had a nasty surprise when I logged onto my banking app this morning.

To my horror, I appeared to be overlimit on my Barclaycard which is something I never do nor do I ever miss payments!

I looked at the transactions and found that PAYPAL had taken my e-bay seller's fees from my credit card instead of my bank account.

Now I checked my PAYPAL account to see if I had mistakenly set up my CC as an ebay payment account and no, it wasn't.
My bank account was set up to pay any fees and is showing as my "primary" account with my CC showing as an "alternate" method of payment.

There is/were adequate funds in my bank account to cover any fees so why have they taken the funds from my CC??

Anyway, I immediately make a payment to cover the fees plus the minimum payment for this month which is now showing on my app but that doesn't change the fact that I went overlimit by a few hours.

What will the consequences be for me as far as limit increase I was hoping for??
I presume that a limit increase will now not be on the cards *no pun intended* and also, will an overlimit marker be placed on my CF's??

Any advice will be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Paypal have been having glitches recently, who knows what happened in your case. That's why I don't set up automatic payments.

Do you know for sure that you've been fined for the over limit?

The over limit marker would only be there if your statement was produced when you were over the limit.

Having said that, from looking at my credit records, the balances reported to Experian and Equifax were not the same as my statement balances.

You do sound like you were sailing quite close to your limit so it sounds like a case of bad luck by PayPal taking the money from your alternate funding source and not the primary.

For a first time over limit I'd expect just a £12 fee.

I don't expect a CRA mark unless you went over limit through a statement period.

There are two balances. The balance on the account when the information is sent to the CRA and the statement balance, which should match what's on your statement.

I rang Barclaycard earlier to enquire about a possible over-limit charge, the advisor explained that until my payment has cleared, he could not tell me if a charge would be added to my account.
I am to ring back when the system updates my latest payment to get an answer.

I dont get a new statement until around the 6th of every month so I am ok on that front.

I was sailing close to my limit and the funny thing is, I always make a payment as soon as I am paid on the 15th of every month because I just don't trust the direct debit to work (been a victim of a direct debit not going through in the past with CC's which resulted in a late payment charge which I claimed back).
This particular month, I decided not to do this to let the DD take the payment instead and THIS happens!! :rotfl:

    Ironic eh........

Was the Paypal payment requested today? If so, the debit card payment today will cancel it out...
I have numerous qualifications in Business and Finance, Accountancy, Health and Safety and am now studying Law.

Don't rely on anything I write as it may be wrong!!!

Yes, the payment was requested today but was taken immediately unfortunately.
You usually get a couple of days warning but as I didnt expect it to be taken from my CC!

My CC is now showing as back below the limit so all in all it was over for 12 hours.

Will ring them again tomorrow to see what, if any, damage has been done.
Hope I get away with it because its an unfair way to have my credit worthiness scuppered!!

It is possible that PayPal were unable to contact your bank (primary funding) at the time for various reasons. In that case it would automatically access funding from the secondary source which in your case was your Barclaycard.
You may question anything I say. Just be polite, otherwise you go straight on to my Ignore List, which funds a good old fashioned knees-up every Xmas. Cheers;)
