Real Internet Download Speeds

I've always noticed connection speeds don't relate directly to download times of websites. For example if your connection speed increases by four times you might only reduce the time by half. Presumably real internet download speeds are limited to the weakest link. This is often blamed on the users server, but I guess it is much more commonly down to the amount of traffic and upload limits on the other end.

Is anyone aware of a site which can provide an idea of real internet speeds after allowing for all the congestion? Obviously this will vary a lot depending on the circumstances, but there must be a guideline or working average.

It would be interesting to test download times for various sites verses our download speeds from a standard test. Newspaper front pages for example.

This took 75 seconds based on 2.4 mps.

That only took me ~ 5 secs on my 3G dongle. The site wasn't cached as I don't read the Mail.

This is a speedtest taken just after...

    I saved the page.

    HTML is 460kB
Scripts, images etc. are 5.94MB and there are an amazing 419 elements making that up.
I am using google chrome on an I3 based laptop

I tried it using LogMeIn to access my home PC and was unable to time it - the page seemed to appear instantly. That's on a VM 60Mbps cable connection. The desktop is I5 based and once again using Chrome.

I only occasionally read the Mail to ridicule it - honest ;)

Perhaps try some other sites something which takes time for you to download. I'm using Firefox, but surprised if the browser would make that much difference.

My fan came on so the processor must be working overtime to show all that junk! Although if I download it a second time it is almost instantaneous.
