Monitoring electricity to one floor

Can anyone advise me. My friend has a need to monitor electricity use to just one floor of his house, the top floor of a 3 storey house. Even if it were just the ring main, just the sockets on that floor it would be a great help. I have just been looking at the monitors that work by slipping a device round the main cable to the electricity meter. Does anyone know if you can use these on the cable that comes from the consumer unit to supply a particular ring main so that he can monitor how much energy is being consumed on just this ring? I have spent ages looking but the sites only refer to the meter and the whole house consumption. Any advice would be much appreciated.
