Royal Mail Postage Cost. Learnt my lesson with the price rise!!

 bl**dy Hell. Went to post office tody to post a couple of items I sold on eBay. Sold a pair of boots for £7.00. Marked up for £4.00. Postage cost me £5.65!!!!! So out by £1.65.

The other items I estimated under by about £1.50 on postage cost. I did hear they were putting their prices up but did not think it would affect it that much. I usually guess postage correctly and don't normally make anything on top by whacking up the postage so I was confident my prices were reflected accordingly. Well I got a shock today.

I'm off to read that Royal Mail price increase thread. Wish I read it before.

Oh well. At least i know now.

Have you been living under a rock? They changed three weeks ago. Not point estimating postage when the actual cost can be worked out very simply using the royal mail website.

I keep a cardboard box on top of the scales, so when I weigh something, I've factored in the cost of packaging too. Now there's a tape measure standing by too. I find I'm border line on the 16cm rule. So folding something in just a little further, can mean £3 or so cheaper postage. Worth spending just a couple of minutes on it.

I sold something the other day, I was aware of the increases so packed the item beforehand. Previously I would have just put it in any box to hand but I spent ages measuring and looking for a box that would fall under the 16cm cube regulations, I then spent quite a while managing to fit the items into this box like a jigsaw so the buyer could benefit from the lesser postage amount. I don't think I will be doing it again, if I costed for the time it took me to do this it would have certainly have been cheaper just to charge the large parcel rate. However I was worried that I wouldn't get any bids as the high postage would put people off:(

It surprising what you can get in them - especially corner to corner.

But if i have any doubt - i put 'other courier'.

Then if it does not fit - i send myhermes. Cheapest is £3 - i charge £2.99 anyway.

But is is more hassle not being able to just use old recycled boxes laying around when using Royal Mail. Also makes packing them well a problem.
