Flights to Florida

Hi,
Hoping for some assistance please.
My work colleague wants to book a flight to Florida (MCO) for the middle of September but only has a budget of £500. We have both trawled lots of websites today but have been unable to find flights for much less than £600.
She doesn't mind a stopover, but would prefer to avoid Miami & New York, we've found flights going via Charlotte or Atlanta for about £587, does anyone know if they are ok places for a connecting flight? These flights are on either United, Delta or US Airways. I've flown on United a few years ago direct to San Francisco and it was alright but haven't flown on Delta or US Airways so can't comment.
She's flying solo so a bit nervous, ideally she would fly on Virgin but they are coming out at over £700 and she doesn't have the budget.
Can anyone suggest another airline that might have flights nearer her budget or are we flogging a bit of a dead horse?
Any advice is much appreciated.

I have connected via both Charlotte and Atlanta. The former is much smaller and much easier to connect via. Atlanta is a very large airport and can be quite busy. In my time I've managed to miss two flights there, one connecting and one joining!
I guess it will be US Airways for Charlotte. I have flown to Orlando with them via Charlotte and although a few years back found them fine.
Delta equally good, but this will route via ATL or JFK.
Personally I don't rate United for Longhaul flights. I think however it is a bit hit and miss. Ex Continental aircraft and crew fine. Ex Old United - terrible in my experience.0 -
Have you looked at flying charter into Sanford airport? Flights are usually a bit cheaper & Sanford is only around 30 minutes drive from Orlando!Going down the Oteley Road to see the Shrewsbury aces! :T0

Thanks for the responses, she's going to look again online tonight so if she doesn't get any better deals, I'll suggest Sanford but she won't drive in Florida so unless there's an easy way to get to MCO from there, she won't do it.
She's meeting her parents in Florida so she wants an easy way of doing it & I think she's planning to travel back to MCO with them as they have already booked their flights. She would prefer to fly back to the UK with them, but they are flying Virgin and the cost of their flight is way over her budget.0 -
