Post-Survey Gas/Electrical Checks

Advice needed, please! My survey has just come back, recommending that I get the property's mains gas and heating tested by a Gas Safe qualified engineer, and the electrics tested by an NICEIC electrician.

I just found out that our trusted family handyman holds NAPIT electrical certification, not NICEIC.

Does this matter in any practical terms? Is there any reason that one is recommended over the other?

All surveys recommend this because the surveyor is not qualified to carry out these tests themselves. Not that they are compulsory or even really needed.

No. A NAPIT regulated electrician has just done some Part-P work on our house and the certification is the same as NICEIC. The report will therefore be just as reliable.

    Thanks for your answers!
Argh, in any case, our family builder just said he's not free to do the checks in the next few weeks, so looks like I need to find someone else that's certified and reliable :(

I don't even know where to start, he's the only guy my entire extended family have used! Any recommendations for good, certified London-based professionals??

You have not yet answered as per BitterAndTwisted as to whether these checks are actually required. The surveyor will always tell you to get them checked.

Are you getting the checks for your own peace of mind in case there are hidden issues?

I have the contact details of the guy who replaced the boiler, shower and quite a bit of plumbing in our rented flat in TW14. We even as tenants were pretty impressed with his quality of work and work ethic so we were planning to ask him to quote for some work in the house we're buying. If he's in your area then I can PM you his details if you like?

Just for my own peace of mind, I guess, although I have been strongly recommended the checks by a friend, who had her electrics checked before exchange and it turned out to potentially be very dangerous. She needed a whole rewire, so went back an negotiated on it.

She didn't, however, check her boiler, and ended up having to replace that 2 weeks after moving in!

That would be great, thank you very much! TW14 isn't terribly far. Much appreciated.
