I believe that First Direct and Nationwide now have standard procedures in place for customers that (quite rightly) want to challenge the bank to prove its identity when calling customers.

Giving you a number to call is not really a great idea unless you can verify it in some other way.

The thing that the banks seem to completely miss is that their advice is to not do the things that they are then requesting customers to do.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.
  • I refuse to give out my security details when anyone calls me. You can bet that if I was to fall pray to a scam, the bank/cc company would blame me for having given out my details!

I always ask if I can ring them back to verify who they are ie ringing the main number on their website, not ringing a random number they give me. I'm always surprised by how huffy some of them get about it!

Nationwide did this to me recently but unfortunately the guy calling me didn't have an internal phone number, gave me the wrong ID to pass to the call centre operative, so I ended up round in circles trying to figure out if the person who had called me was indeed from Nationwide. Luckily, the call centre assistant I got through to was very helpful and was happy to investigate and call me back. Eventually it turned out it was all legit and they were just calling to say my transfer to their current account had been successful. But I wasn't giving them my date of birth until I was sure!
