Would you say that Mrs Thatcher was ruled by her civil servants/special advisers?

    TruckerT

Thatcher had her inner circle of ministers who were on side.

Those that might cause "trouble" were given jobs that kept them out of harms way. The wets.

Special advisers are relatively new. In the old days MP's had skills and experience outside of politics !

Probably why Ed M. is so clueless. All text book and therefore lacks any imagination or vision.

Why do you single out Ed Miliband from all the other party leaders?

Yes, but how did she prevent the interference of the old guard of the civil service?

Oh, I thought you said it was something to do with a lack of skills and experience outside of politics. My mistake - sorry!

The UK and almost all of Europe have erred in terms of believing that austerity, fiscal austerity in the short term, is the way to produce real growth.

    It is not.

When even the biggest 'bond vigilante' of them all is telling you to change course and spend more, it's probably time to listen....

    Still, George Osborne knows best.
Like all politicians Osborne starts by fitting his economic policies with his political philosophy....sooner or later he will realise it won't work. Problem is we all suffer meantime. Even by their own declared standards they are now failing badly.

To eliminate the deficit we can:

    A) Reduce annual public spending by rather more than the deficit. This would be austerity - and electoral suicide.

    B) Increase the rate of taxation to collect rather more than the deficit. This would be suicide.

    C) Increase the level of taxes collected by growing the economy. Nice idea, but how to do that is the £120 billion pound question.

    D) Increase the deficit whilst espousing austerity and calling it Plan A. Doesn’t have the desired results. A form of delayed suicide.

    E) Can’t think of anything else, so just keep spending. As with B, this would be suicide.

    F) Quite a bit of A, a little bit of B, and if necessary borrow for infrastructure projects to try and put the foundations in place for a bit of C.

    G) Do anything at all that will encourage HPI, because then we’ll all be rich and the deficit won’t matter a jot.
