Then there's also guidance from BOE and FCA.
So how did Gordon Brown manage to get away with it?

I do worry that we have a country where it appears over half the households are not capable of living without some form of benefit handouts. How did that happen?
Governments of a certain colour like this as the more people feel dependant on the government teat, the more they will vote for whoever offers the most warm milk. That said milk is paid for via unsustainable borrowing doesn't seem to bother them.I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. I might occasionally give bad advice but at least it's free.
Like all religions, the Faith of the Invisible Pink Unicorns is based upon both logic and faith. We have faith that they are pink; we logically know that they are invisible because we can't see them.0 -

Treasury works for the Government of the day. Will provide the support to flesh out the basic ideas , project consequences of a particular course of action etc. The Government (Cabinet) then debates the options and makes a choice.0 -

I'm going to miss boom and bust. Since Brown (and his bottom) we only seem to have bust. What a cunning stunt!I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. I might occasionally give bad advice but at least it's free.

All senior politicians have loads of civil servants. Some of these civil servants have the job of creating policies and researching the effect of them.
The trick the senior politician has is to choose the policies that won't lose votes.
In other words all government departments in this country could run quite easily by themselves without a minister.
The problem with some of politicians is that they also have their special advisers. These special advisers know they are only in the job while the politician is around so they don't tend to do their research properly. There as the civil servants are around regardless of the minister and government.
Hence Osborne's pasty tax and caravan tax, and Brown's raid on pension funds.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

Would you say that Mrs Thatcher was ruled by her civil servants/special advisers?

The UK Public Finances are a shambles of which we should be ashamed
http://www.mindfulmoney.co.uk/wp/shaun-richards/the-uk-public-finances-are-a-shambles-of-which-we-should-be-ashamed/It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.0 -

Special advisers are relatively new. In the old days MP's had skills and experience outside of politics !
Probably why Ed M. is so clueless. All text book and therefore lacks any imagination or vision.0
