Phone has "lost" most my stored contacts - help!

I have a wildfire s, which I hate but I am stuck with it.
It was fine until yesterday when it crashed and needed rebooting.
Looking at my sms messages I noticed that instead of it having the name of my contact who had messaged it just has the number.
Looking in my contact list there only seems to be about 20% of the people I should have in there.
Is it possible that I have contacts stored on both my phone and sd card and that it is only seeing one of those lists - if so how do I solve this please?
Just found that by putting the phone in Airplane mode the contacts re-appear??? No idea why.
Many thanks in advance!

Depending on how your phone is setup, there may be a backup of your contacts on your Gmail account.
First try removing the battery, waiting a minute or so and putting it back in again. If my post hasn't helped you, then don't click the 'Thanks' button!
