Can cold weather affect mobile phone battery life and shorten it?

I have got a Samsung Galaxy Y mobile simfree phone and had it a few years, I have recently noticed it has developed a severe memory effect where it runs down quickly and runs out when it has barely gone to the bottom of the battery scale and when I switch it on it has 1 section which goes to nothing then it cuts out completely and requires charging. It charges up to full within an hour then when I use it again does the same thing. I have been using it outdoors in the cold temperatures of the long cold winter and chilly spring;can this reduce operating capacity/life and if this is so, is it maybe time for a new mobile phone battery with the way it is acting?;) I have heard cold weather can spell curtains for various rechargeable device batteries and shorten their life;-is this true? Some equipment manuals apparently do say so.

Cold weather means any batteries won't last as long as normal. Whether or not it can shorten the lifetime of rechargeables I can't say but I daresay google can help on that.
If you've had the phone several years the battery probably needs replacing anyway as cycle life is usually about 1000 and smartphones usually need a daily charge. I'd just go for an eBay cheapy. I've had that type for all sorts of things and don't recall getting a duff one.0 -

I'll get a replacement off the local market, thanks for that reply;)0 -
I'd go cheapy BUT reputable - Lithium Ion batteries have been linked to some overheating issues, sometimes leading to damage and fire. Cheapo Chinese ones from bottom-price sellers could prove more expensive in the long run if they kill your mobile/catch light for the sake of a few extra quid,0

True but the ones in the news that have had faults were all reputable ones... The disreputable ones probably don't get reported.
Unfortunately I don't think there is any way to be sure just what you get. I know for sure that Maplin buy cheap Chinese tat items and sell them at multiples of the eBay price. I just look for high volume sellers with a high feedback score and hope.0
