When I tried to check data in a spreadsheet this morning I first noticed that there were no "recent documents" in the start panel. I opened the spreadsheet from its location and discovered that all the data that I had entered since the beginning of March had disappeared. I may have run "Crap Cleaner" last Friday - could this be the culprit?

Unless you store your data in the Windows Temp folder, Crap Cleaner shouldn't have affected it. It will remove all the recent documents from the start menu, they are only links, not actual documents.

One thing I have experienced with Crap Cleaner, and only once, was a corrupted registry file after cleaning that caused the computer to roll back to a previously restore point - about a month or so old. That may have happened to you? Still not sure if that would affect your documents though.

Do you normally open, update and save the spreadsheet with the same name each time, or do you save it under a new name? What does it say for the date modified if you look at the spreadsheet in Windows explorer?

I would start by doing a search on your pc in case you accidentally saved the spreadsheet under a slightly different name or to a different location in March and didn't realise because you always opened it from the list of recent documents.
