You still need to completely remove one of either MSE or Avast.

I reckon you're spot on. It's still running chkdsk. About 10 hours now, and a lot of bad clusters still being replaced by windows. (I'll remove Avast, assuming it will ever let me!)0

Up to 13.5 hours now, it's been stopped at checking 21% of free clusters for most of that time though. I'll leave it overnight.0
