Hi All,
Im looking for a reasonably priced shampoo and conditioner that is sls and paraban free.
Ive suffered with a dry, itchy, flaky scalp for ages but its defo getting worse. Looking around the net they are quite expensive so just wondered if anyone has any recommendations?

    I am using

    Shampoo SLS free Extra Mild

    http://www.naturallythinking.com/products/Shampoo-SLS-free-Extra-Mild.html

And also the SLS free shower gel

    and Organic Surge conditioner

    http://www.organicsurge.com/product/colour-protect-conditioner

These are the ingredients for the Naturally Thinking hair conditioner which I don't have, I don't know if they are ok?

Aqua, Cetyl alcohol, Cetrimonium chloride, Cocos nucifera (Coconut) kernel oil, Glyceryl stearate S/E, Phenoxyethanol & Ethylhexylglycerin, Citric acid, Tocopherol (Vitamin E)

Have you been formally diagnosed with xerosis? You would want fully sulphate free rather than simply SLS free, none of the sulphate surfactants are skin friendly.

My mother uses the NaturallyThinking shampoo and I use their shower gel which is almost identical in formulation - I occasionally use it as shampoo but usually conditioner wash. My atopic eczema/ contact dermatitis has gone completely, my mothers atopic eczema/ seborrhoeic dermatitis has reduced by at least half. :T

Do pay by PayPal their customer service is patchy. We buy five litres at a time which makes it economical.

Conditioner I am using Garnier Fructis Repair & Shine, they change the ingredients regularly so check for parabens. I will probably try NaturallyThinking next, my hair loves coconut oil.
"Water, cetearyl alcohol, palm oil, behentrimonium chloride, CI 19140/yellow 5, CI 15985/yellow 6, niacinamide, sugar cane extract, stearamidopropyl dimethylamine, olive fruit oil, chlorhexidine dihydrochloride, limonene, camellia sinesis leaf extract, linalool, benzyl salicylate, isopropyl alcohol, apple fruit extract, pyridoxine HCl, avocado oil, shea butter, citric acid, butylphenyl methylpropional, lemon peel extract, hexylcinnamal, glycerin, fragrance FIL C35637/1."

Best thing to do is get a diagnosis, there are a number of dermatological conditions which could give the symptoms your describe, xerosis (dry scalp) is not the most common. By all means go sulphate free - sulphates are evil chemicals IMO - but appreciate you are basically amateur treating a condition that you have amateur diagnosed which is not recommended.

Also review your diet, skin health is just as much what you put on the inside as what you put on the outside. A good diet makes for a strong skin barrier which keeps water in and nasties out, also reduces or prevent inappropriate immune response. Poor diet choices increases inflammation, affect the composition of your sweat and sebum which can feed bad bugs on your skin or cause irritation themselves.

Don't scratch because you can get stuck in the 'itch-scratch cycle', try to stick to cool water and limit towel turbans - both scratching and heat trigger the release of the inflammatory/ allergy hormone histamine. If you itch like mad use a cold compress, either a wet/ damp towel or a gel cap that you put in the refrigerator or even a bag of frozen peas if you are desperate! HTH. :)

I use Pureology Hydrate shampoo, it's a little pricey but it works out cheaper because it's so concentrated I only need one bottle a year:)

Using a foaming pump bottle from lakelands I managed to stretch it to 14 months! I now use it straight from the shampoo bottle and in 5 months I've only used 1/3.

Naked shampoo is cheaper but it did not work on my hair and left a weird residue...

The NAKED range, available from boots, has no nasties. I use it on my DD's (2) hair.

Holland and Barrett do a range of organic toiletries, called Dr Organic. Available in different fragrances, like Honey, Pomegranate, Tea Tree, and with soap, face wash, shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, moisturisers, etc.

I love their Tea Tree face wash - a huge tube that lasts ages. I'm allergic to SLS and SDS and use their shower gels with no problems.
If you have nothing constructive to say just move along.
