Using a bus for a buisness

One of my clients is currently buying a bus
Need qualified driver- as it is very part time this cost is quite high as not many drivers seem to want a few hours here and there. Although they drive it and leave it all day they need the driver on site the whole time in case it had to be moved in an emergency etc
Insurance is high and it needs to be undercover at night as a term of their insurance (not the best area)
Toilet emptying is a cost
Diesel is high and only does a few miles
They need additional public liability insurance for when they let people on it at events(they already had some)
Even getting it washed is expensive and they need it clean as it represents the company
The initial purchase cost- very dependent on what you want but a decent bus isn't cheap
Servicing/mot which must be done promptly to as involves public
Someone mentioned playbuses. It used to cost us £50k a year to keep each playbus on the road (insurance, garaging, servicing, insurance, diesel ) without a driver cost.June challenge £100 a day £3161.63 plus £350 vouchers plus £108.37 food/shopping saving
July challenge £50 a day. £ 1682.50/1550
October challenge £100 a day. £385/£31000 -
I really would recommend Working on Wheels as a source of information. It might be worth speaking to Working on Wheels (formally the Playbus Association). They're primarily children's playbuses and community project type buses, but they do have some commercial members. Even if they can't help with the legalities of a bus shop, they should have advice about buying a bus, getting the conversion done etc.
They have been an absolute lifeline to us: we use a converted transit type van for a mobile outreach service and were having HUGE difficulty and expense with insurance.
Browse their website, ask their advice, but bear in mind that they are a charity, so if you don't have cause to join please give them a donation from your early profits!
