Couple of minor problems

Got a couple of minor issues on my Proton Impian I should really sort out.

1. Steering whines a little when I turn the wheel. Also on near full lock (to the right hand side only) the steering seems to jump, like the wheels don't move fluidly to one side, they kinda jump in steps. Power steering fluid is not low.

2. Brake servo occasionally (seems to be when hot, after a longish journey) kinda makes a whiny noise like its not happy, it feels like the ABS is kicking in and braking power is reduced. Releasing and re depressing pedal its fine. Brake fluid full but may need changing?

Any ideas? And I'm presuming these things are fairly minor.

Take it into a garage ?
  • Wrong forum Kaiser, we try to save money here not give it to others..;)

    1. Could try changing the fluid. Also jack vehicle up both sides and check swivel/ball joints are not seizing by going from lock to lock by grabbing the road wheels and push pulling. Check there is fluid still in the system when the juddering starts as lock tightens.

    2. Possibly vacuum pipe partly blocked by semi collapsed pipe which may not be showing as such outside.

Thanks will try that. Doesn't sound too major!

Except that this person seems to have little knowledge about repairing cars. Hence, the best advice is.... take it to a garage. !

None of us had any knowledge at first, so we got our hands dirty and skinned our knuckles and burnt parts of us on hot bits and learned a bit more each time.

Taking it to a garage was simply out of the question for much of my motoring life, at first i didn't have the money, then i got married and had kids (and i raised them not the state) and had even less money for garages.

By then i'd learned enough to work on other peoples cars and also saw (and still do see) the poor work carried out at rip off prices by many garages, so i still do a lot of my own and better than most garages do.

Rev Henry is having a go, blinkin good luck to him, if any of us can help a fellow money saver by giving them a few pointers...which might well be wrong :)....and save them a hefty bill we will, it what motoring forums are all about.

Thanks very much G&S. Bill, I fail to see how you have decided I know nothing about cars, I've understood perfectly well what G&S said which is probably more than 90% of motorists can do!
