Does anyone have any thoughts on the Gourmet Society Card. Been looking for deals and have found some good ones, but these things often seem better than they are in reality...

Would be grateful for you any info.

Avoid the Gourmet Society, giant scam!
I signed up for a free trial from the Gourmet Societythrough their website on 24/10/2012. I paid £1 from my Visa Debit card to coverpostage of my trial card to me. Then on the 9th May I noticed a charge for£29.95 on my same debit card from the Gourmet Society. I had not received anynotification of the fact this payment would be taken, nor had I receivedfurther goods or anything from them! I emailed to ask what on earth was goingon and they said that as I hadn't cancelled after my trial they were making mepay for a full year. They claimed they sent out a renewal pack in the post, which I never received. AS all initial contact was via online and email theywere clearly scamming me by not notifying me they were going to take furtherpayments. Equally at the time of taking out the trial it was not made at allclear that I was signing up to a renewable scheme and that they were gettingauthorisation to make future charges on my debit card.
All in all it feels like a total scam and I am very angryabout it. I contacted their customer services team who are refusing to refundthe money they stole from me, even when I asked for escalation to seniormanagement. This type of behaviour needs to be stopped!

Also they don't have that many restaurants on their books and nearly all exclude weekend use. Tastecard is much much better!
  • Hi, I am currently having the same issue with this card. Being initially duped into it with the tempting "free trial" I stupidly gave my bank details in order for them to take the £1 postage / delivery charge/
Obviously once they have these details they sink their teeth in and WILL NOT let go of your cash without a fight. I emailed in June to say I didnt want my membership any longer, but didnt want a lengthy premium rate call, so could they take the email as cancellation. "NO" was the answer, they wanted me to post the card back too, which I did. They claim not to have recieved it. After many emails, they are now saying the following, "The Gourmet Society has no wish to prevent you from cancelling your membership, which is why we provide clear and detailed advice at point of contact. We have requested that you follow these simple and low cost steps in order to comply with your responsibilities under our agreement. In this instance you appear to have chosen not to do this and therefore your liability remains in place. Should we be unable to take payment from the details held on file, we will pass your account over to our Recovery team to collect any outstanding monies owed." The end of this email also pointed out that they were sending me A REPLACEMENT CARD!!! Despite me re-iterating my wish to not be with them.. :(
