Need Advice Please Regarding Tenancy Agreement

Hi all
My partner and I have been renting this 1 bedroom flat for nearly 6 months, our 6 month tenancy ends next month, the flat is managed by a letting agent on the landlords behalf, I asked them about renewing my tenancy and they have given me 2 options-
1. To pay £60 to renew my tenancy for another 6 months.
OR
2. To go on a month to month periodic tenancy. (They told me they would prefer me to do this.)
I really don't have a clue what to do, firstly I cannot really afford to pay £60 and I think it's is ridiculous having to pay that amount anyway, but part of me feels like it would make me feel a bit more secure if I was to renew for another 6 months but I really don't know what to do.
I found it a bit bizarre that they seem to want me to go with the monthly option as I would have thought they would want to tie me in for another 6 months and pay £60 but it seems not.
If I was to go on a month to month would that make it any easier for the landlord to just evict us? Or is it the same as the 6 month tenancy? I really don't have a clue.
What I want to know is the difference between these 2 options, the pros and cons of them both, which one is better and does one or the other leave me less secure.
Many thanks

I'd prefer the month-month on the basis you can leave with a months notice.
Yes it does mean LL can evict you sooner but likeyhood they won't and it will hold out better for you.
Wouldn't worry to much about it as long as you pay your rent most LL's leave you to it!People don't know what they want until you show them.0 -
Who is 'they', the agent or the landlord? If you want a new fixed term tenancy without paying £60 approach the landlord directly, bypass the letting agent.
You are more secure on a new fixed term, you can be served two months no fault notice if on a rolling periodic tenancy. If within the fixed term you can only be evicted for major breaches of the AST, for example non payment of rent.Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0 -
Im a landlord and I only ever do the first tenancy for 6 months, they automatically go onto the month to month basis after that which has so far never been a problem for either them or myself. Hope this helps0
