I'm so worried i could really do with some advice.

i have worked part time for the same company for nearly 16 years in september, just before xmas we bought out another company only 32 a mile away, and the 2 companies merged. i have found out that this week the branch i work at is closing for sale
they only employ one receptionist at the new site now.
do they have to try and find me something else before they can legally make me redunant?
im a single parent of 7 kids with a mortagage. thing are hard enough without this. i would love to say stick your job, but its hard rtying to find a job with the hours i can work.
i feel im going mad with worry.

    Hi,

Sorry to hear about that. I was made redundant just after my kids were borne, so I know of the stress that causes.

Try these two links to acas and direct.gov.uk:

    http://www.acas.org.uk/index.aspx?articleid=774

    http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Employment/Employees/RedundancyAndLeavingYourJob/index.htm

Are they likely to be making 20 or more redundant in the coming months? If so a consultation period is required.

I would start looking around for something else - not easy I know. If you are lucky and you find something, most companies would look for voluntary redundancies on an enhanced package.

They are also obliged to look for alternative jobs for you.

The other thing to bear in mind is that redundancy forms part of the statutory grievance & dismissal procedures. The employer needs to follow set procedures (you'll find these on the acas website as well) or they could be landed with an automatic unfair dismissal claim.

Let me know if you need more info.

i only found out through a friend.

I'd at least wait until the company tells you what's happening, rather than going on something a friend said. They might have something else lined up for you.

If they make you reduntand, you'll get at least a week of pay for every full year you work, so you'll get 5 times whatever you earn in 1 week (or i presume 2 days in your case).

Good luck, and try not to worry about it.

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
