Not sure if here is best, or 'in my home' board, but I'll start here:

What lense is most appropriate for camera:

To focus on target area 10 metres from camera and 15 metres.

For context, the camera will be wired back to a DVR, will need night vision, and will be trained on a gate (10m) & beyond that a door (5m further on).

I've phoned various suppliers and been told variously:

* 8 mm should be fine
* you need varifocul from 2.8 - 12mm
* 9 - 22mm
* 6 - 60mm !!

I also want a 2nd camera to do a similar job, but it would have to be wireless in order to get the picture back to the DVR

General comments on appropriate lense appreciated, plus specific camera recommendations also welcome!

    It all depends on what type of image you require as the various trade-offs apply. The angle of view is usually 'king' the greater the better - BUT, this results in reduced definition unless you get a decent CCD chip of 480 lines or greater.

    By wireless - you do realise it will still need a wire (to power it). The image will be delivered on the USM band, but can blitz your WiFi if using an adjacent channel. Far better to do a cable run and avoid a needless USM transmission.

    Not a lot of info to go. You the area is 10 meters from the camera, what size is the target area, width of area and height.

    anyone entering the gate would be at 90 degrees to camera.
    Likewise the door.

    Yes, power is available. A cable run would involve digging and burying...

    B/B is not WiFi. It's wired.

    Assuming you already have the DVR then.

    13mm on 1/3 ccd with either 700 tv lines(or higher) or HD which can be 6 x the definition of 700 tv line. Single camera like that could set you back about £200. Box camera with C/CS lens in an external housing. Could be an off the shelf camera with 13mm lens and high tv lines, just not aware of one myself

    But trouble is, the person on screen will only fill about half of the depth of the screen. So facial recognition may be awkward

    try this site to download a program called cctv lens calcualtor, only a trial version but gives you a good idea what you need and what it will show on screen.

    Not a bad price for 540 tv, and 9-22mm V/R. Be better if had more tv lines, but for the price, seems a good camera. Obviously will require you to run a cable, but far better than wireless.

    Do have to pay extra for the cable and psu, unless you have those already

    Thanks. Think I'll get this for wired one. There are 2 versions: 540 TVL for £59 or 600TVL for £69.

    Just need a similar wireless version too.

    Don't have the cable/psu - will those be standard and if so worth shopping around? (there again, the 600 TVL +VAT + the cable takes price to £100 so free delivery.)
