i agree with what everyone else is saying. you must find out why you were not promoted, or this will bug you for a very long time. it sounds really unfair. do you have a good enough relationship with your line manager to approach him/her and ask for feedback on your performance? if there is something you could improve then it would be worthwhile knowing. at least you know you have minor problems with assertiveness, you can now work on that.

let us know how you get on.

edit: I would add you would need to make it come over in the right way - not wingeing because the others have got promotion. say what you like about the job, what you are good at...but what kind of advice can you give me about getting on?

    i totally agree with this.

i would approach line manager and ask if they have a minute to talk. i would just come out and say something like. i have been with the company for 18 months or so now, i enjoy my work, blah, blah, highlight projects sucesses, interests etc. and say that you would like some feedback on your performance and are there any areas that you could improve on.

dont be afraid to ask. by wanting to improve your performance is a postive for the organisation.

If I was your manager I would view that as a very positive attitude. That you have ambition and are striving to do better. what more could a manager want?

  • I did have 'that' chat a few months ago with my manager. He's an approachable chap and we get on well. He's also the 3rd manager I've had in 2 years, which I believe could also be part of the problem.

His main feedback was that I needed to look at the requirements for the level above mine and see what I need to be doing that i'm not currently. That was it really. I was rated as 'highly valued' in my last annual assessment. We were supposed to have formal assessments this march, but the online system messed up and they didn't go ahead.

I don't think i consider myself a failure - i just haven't reached my own expectations and that upsets me

Did your line manager give you an idea of what you should be doing to reach the requirements for the level above and have you been given the opportunity to do it? If you are rated as highly valued, I would say they need to set out the reasons why you haven't been promoted. I think you must have the conversation again.

I'm sure your girl friend will be supportive.

Anyone want to hire a Analyst/Programmer in London, MSc and BSc from a Russel Group university with 2 years of industrial experience and 18 months of academic research experience? Anyone? Hobbies include reading Tom Clancy novels and daydreaming about being a web developer living and working on a beach. Full clean UK driving license.

What languages can you program in? I think from your web developer comment they won't be the ones we need at my company, but you never know.

ringo - not getting promotion does not make you a failure. There's a Chinese saying that it's not what you acheive, but the obstacles that you overcome to acheive what you do thatdetermines success.

I graduated with a good degree from a good university, but am currently working in the public sector in a relatively low paid (mainly admin) job compared to the most of my friends. I'm trying to rectify the situation as i don't feel challenged and it doesn't help that people around me keep telling me I'm 'wasted' in my current role! I know it's easy to get stuck in a rut where you feel you're a failure. I felt like that just last week when I applied for a job I KNOW I can do, but was rejected. But that sort of thinking will only consume and hinder you.

Remember "The World Is Yours"! Keep trying mate, and I'm sure you'll get the success u deserve.

Well, at work we use an inhouse database query language which is a bit like SQL. I've previously coded a lot in php and Perl, I did java at university, bits of javascript, i know css and html fairly well. Here's a site template I recently made for a friend http://www.carlink.co.uk/demo.htm. I've built a CMS for the freemasons with php/mysql that's been running for a couple of years without any major hiccups. I've done a bit of VBA in Excel also.

I've contacted a few agencies with the view towards moving more towards consultancy - i've done a lot of client facing work and enjoy being the middle man between tech and non-tech people. I'm also very use to reading and decyphering technical spec documents

I've talked to my gf about it, she's been supportive and told me to push on and get the promotion.

I was right, they're not what we're recruiting for (we're mainframe based) but you obviously have great skills and experience and very motivated so I don't think you should have much problem finding another job somewhere else. Good luck!
